The number one road to drive when you are on an RV adventure in Auckland, New Zealand is appropriately named Scenic Drive. The road is just west of Auckland and travels through the Waitakere Mountain Range. This road runs north and south that begins in Titirangi and ends up at the Arataki Visitor Center with some of the best scenery in the world.

A 45 minute drive north out of the city will take you to the Hibiscus Coast Highway where you will visit both Waiwera and the Wenderholm Regional Park. You can also enjoy the beautiful beaches at Orewa where kite surfers practice their sport.

West along the sea is the Pohutukawa Coast Trail where you will travel through coastal parkland, historical sites of the first European inhabitants and native bush country. The scenery is breathtaking and there are places for a picnic.

Bay of Islands:

This drive will take you into the Northland region, which boasts some fantastic natural scenery. Here, you can enjoy numerous water sports or go on a dolphin-sighting trip. While here, stay overnight at Russell-Orongo Bay Holiday Park or Kamo Springs Holiday Park.

Coromandel Discovery:

This trip is one of the most scenic in the area, where you will witness caves, forests and stunning beaches or enjoy diving, surfing and bungee jumping. While on this drive, you can rest at the Harbourside Holiday Park, the Anglers Lodge Motel & Holiday Park and many other camper sites.

Highway 1:

From Auckland to the famous Lake Taupo. En route, stop at Raglan Kopua Holiday Park and spend a day at Raglan Harbour. Or explore the lake from the Great Lake Holiday Park or Club Habitat Holiday Park Turangi.

Safety: Driving is on the left side and drivers should give way to the right. Be cautious of road hazards such as animals, snow and ice, and logging trucks.

When should I book my NZ road trip rental?

The choice of number of motorhome rental companies in NZ is awesome, but demand is also high so please book early as possible—ideally 4 to 6 months in advance or even earlier—especially during peak season or bank holiday weekends.

Do I need a special driving licence?

All the suppliers we offer just require a standard full original licence which you should have held for at least 1 year, please check the terms with the supplier as some ask for a licence to have been held for 2 years. If the licence is not in the Roman Alphabet, then please bring an official translation.

Can I pick up my RV in the South Island and drop it off in the North Island or vice versa?

Yes, many companies operate depots in both the North and South Islands and offer one-way rentals.
